Mervielde celebrates 80 years and looks to the future

13 October 2025

Mervielde celebrates its 80th anniversary. What began in 1945 with Cyriel Mervielde and his horse and cart has grown over four generations into a European player specialising in the transport, storage and handling of liquids for the chemical and lubricant industry. Today, Mervielde combines tradition and innovation, with a clear vision for the future. In 2024, this family business recorded a turnover of 45,535,000 euros.

From horse and cart to total logistics solutions
What began with the transport of milk, flax and packaged goods evolved over eight decades into a specialised range of services in liquid logistics. Today, Mervielde transports hazardous and non-hazardous liquids by road, manages modern storage facilities and offers additional services such as filtering, mixing, heating, packaging liquids and cleaning tankers and tank containers.

Four generations of entrepreneurship
Since the 1960s, the founder's three sons have taken the company forward. The third generation followed in the 1990s and 2000s, and today the fourth generation is also making its entrance.

‘For 80 years, we have been combining entrepreneurship with innovation and vision. We want to continue this tradition in the coming decades, so that we are prepared for the opportunities and challenges of tomorrow,’ says Patrick Mervielde.

In this anniversary year, Mervielde is publishing its first sustainability report. Five pillars summarise what Mervielde stands for and how it wants to use its impact in a positive way. Mervielde has now been awarded an EcoVadis Gold label, which means that it is among the top 5% of sustainable companies in the logistics and transport sector.

Quality and safety as a foundation
Quality and safety have been the backbone of Mervielde for decades. The company obtained its first ISO certificate in 1993, setting the tone for the future. Quality is in the smallest detail, in every link of the planning chain, in every cleaning operation, in every logistics assignment.

Mervielde's safety objectives go beyond legal standards and customer requirements. Mervielde continuously invests in advanced safety systems so that employees can go to work every day with peace of mind.

But Mervielde also goes a step further in terms of social responsibility. In collaboration with TLV, Mervielde drivers visit primary schools as part of their “Veilig op Weg” (Safe on the Road) campaign to teach children how to interact safely with lorries in traffic. From January to June 2025, they visited seven schools and informed 925 pupils.

Future-oriented and sustainable entrepreneurship
With an eye to the future, Mervielde is committed to further digitisation, innovation and sustainability. The company focuses on creating more efficient and sustainable logistics flows.

Mervielde is embracing the digitisation of the sector with both hands. The Transport Management System guarantees efficiency, transparency and precision in planning and service provision.

In the coming years, the company will focus on:
• Smart logistics solutions: at Mervielde, they develop tailor-made solutions, optimise routes and build new warehouses and land tanks to meet specific customer needs. In their own workshop, they build installations that are adapted to each customer's requirements.
• Green mobility, with investments in alternative fuels and energy-efficient fleet expansions. Mervielde is focusing on HVO, among other things, a fuel that emits 90% less CO₂ than regular diesel (B7). But also on electric lorries. And it is investigating the possibility of using lorries with hydrogen combustion engines. By 2030, 50% of their fleet must run on alternative fuel.
• People-oriented growth, with employee engagement and driver well-being remaining central. Because Mervielde is made up of 270 employees and 12 nationalities who do their work, build knowledge, solve problems and help customers move forward every day.

Moving forward together
‘Our strength lies in our people who make a difference every day – from drivers and planners to technicians and administrators. They help build our story. Our hearts remain with the people, our eyes on the horizon. That's how we flow.’ – the Mervielde family
